My First Folk Music Ontario Conference!
Last weekend was the Folk Music Ontario Conference and it was my first time attending. As a first-timer, it can be very overwhelming. As I look back and debrief myself on it, I realize how much I missed. But what I did attend, was incredible!
I got to meet the most incredible artists! I've heard folks say, I found my people. I didn't quite get that but now I do. I definitely found my people. If egos and judgement were going on, I didn't see it. You were accepted for who you were - a musician just trying to make a living from their music.
I got some great tools that will be very helpful; especially when playing live. I did a workshop with the great Shakura S'Aida on being authentic on stage. I thought I was but I wasn't. I will be from now on! Do check out her music https://www.shakurasaida.com/
I got to see the great Russel Decarle of Prairie Oyster, and fellow solo artists like Bobby Dove and their great roots sound. Another great troubadour I got to see again is Julian Taylor since I last saw him play Rotaryfest and wowed the audience. But the stand-out artist for me was Creekbed Carter Hogan. A trans artist and an amazing singer/songwriter. His song, Apiary, will grab you by the soul.
Folk Music Ontario has become Folk Canada and will now be representing musicians from across the country. I can't wait to see the great things that this national organization will do!
